Il y a un an tout juste, Elon Musk a franchi le pas qu’il avait catégoriquement refusé. Interrogé sur la possible réintégration d’Alex Jones, un complotiste américain influent condamné en diffamation pour ses déclarations sur la tragédie de Sandy Hook en 2012, où 20 enfants ont perdu la vie, Musk avait déclaré sans équivoque sur X, anciennement Twitter : «Je n’ai aucune pitié pour ceux qui se servent de la mort d’enfants».

Cependant, récemment, Musk a changé de cap, commentant : «Le peuple a parlé et il en sera ainsi», après avoir publié un sondage demandant si le compte d’Alex Jones devait être réintégré. Près de deux millions de votes ont été recueillis, avec près de 70% d’avis favorables de la part des internautes.

Cette démarche rappelle celle de l’année précédente, où Musk avait également soumis à un vote le retour de l’ancien président Donald Trump sur la plateforme, obtenant l’approbation des internautes et rétablissant le compte du milliardaire républicain dans les minutes qui ont suivi.

En 2022, Alex Jones a été condamné à verser près d’un milliard de dollars pour avoir nié la tuerie de 2012. Les familles des victimes avaient intenté des poursuites contre lui, affirmant être harcelées par des partisans du complotiste qui croyaient fermement que le massacre n’avait jamais eu lieu et que les proches des victimes jouaient un rôle. Banni d’Apple, de YouTube, de Facebook et exclu de Twitter en 2018, Alex Jones a publiquement reconnu la réalité de la tuerie depuis.
